Cardinal Pell: Adam and Eve a Myth

Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney has said that the story of Adam and Eve is a myth and is designed as a religious story for religious purposes.

Pell appeared with notorious atheist Richard Dawkins on an Australian TV Question and Answer show. When questioned about evolution, he said that the existence of Adam and Eve is “not a matter of science but rather a mythological account.”

“It’s a very sophisticated mythology to try to explain the evil and the suffering in the world,” he said. He said that it is impossible to say when there was the first human.

The Bible says that Adam and Eve were the first parents of the whole human family, created by God on the sixth day of creation. But the scientific community has accepted that life on earth evolved in about four billion years.

The Catholic Church does not accept the Bible as the authoritative word of God. Thus the church contributes to unbelief in God. During the French Revolution the constitutional bishop of Paris openly denied the existence of God, saying that everything that he and the church had taught was false. Now Cardinal Pell is essentially doing the same thing by denying the Bible account of the origins of man in the name of the Christian religion. This teaching replaces the authority of God and His word with human reasoning. It is particularly insidious because it comes clothed with the garments of a cardinal pretending to represent the Christian faith. If the authority of the Bible is swept away, the law of God will be disregarded, which will lead to the disregard of all law, and result in anarchy.

If the Catholic Church joins with atheists to promote “the world-wide dissemination of the same teachings that led to the French Revolution,” it will lead to the whole world being involved “in a struggle similar to that which convulsed France.” Education, page 228
