Australia’s Prime Minister Announces Plans to Restrict Discrimination based on Religion

9 News: The Prime Minister will today announce plans to make it illegal to discriminate based on a person’s religious beliefs. This is one of the key recommendations made by the long-awaited Ruddock review into religious freedom, which Scott Morrison will unveil.

Prime Minister Morrison will take a Religious Discrimination Act to the federal election. Under the Act, religious discrimination would be treated as seriously as sexual and racial discrimination.

The review, led by Former Liberal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock, was launched during the same-sex marriage debate last year. At the time, some MPs argued marriage equality could potentially impact on the religious freedoms of Australians of faith.

The treatment of gay students and teachers in religious schools has been another key issue in the religious freedoms debate in parliament.

The government has referred the issue to the Australian Law Reform Commission for review.

The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Anthony Fisher, told the Australian the proposed changes were necessary because society had changed.

“A lot of supporters of traditional marriage felt that they were, one way or another, discriminated against, including being sacked for just saying they supported traditional marriage,” he was quoted.

The Prime Minister and Attorney-General Christian Porter will today announce their intention to accept 14 of the review’s 20 recommendations immediately.

Our Comment:

Note that the Archbishop of Sydney seems to think that God’s law can change with a changing society and that the new restrictions were necessary. Christians and their religious liberty will be restricted. The legal house of Christian believers is being gradually surrounded.

Prophetic Link:

“But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter.” Genesis 19:4.
