Australia: Support for Gay Marriage at All-time High

Support among Australians for same-sex marriage has reached an all-time high, says a Liberal Party survey. Seventy-two percent of Australians want same-sex marriage legalized, the highest of any country, including New Zealand and Great Britain, which already have legalized same-sex marriage. This includes almost all age groups (except over 65) and even among Australians who identify with Christianity, such as Catholic or Anglican. It also includes those families with children in support of same-sex marriage.

And it is putting a lot of pressure on politicians and parliament to take action to legalize gay marriage. Prime Minister Tony Abbot is under pressure to allow a conscience vote on the matter. Coalition MPs are under pressure. This comes as advocates for same-sex marriage take renewed energy from Ian Thorpe’s declaration that he is gay. Thorpe is Australia’s greatest Olympian.

Also, opposition to same-sex marriage has collapsed the poll suggests. Only one in five Australians oppose it.

”The new poll released today shows that overwhelmingly the majority of Australians want to see equality before the law,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

Advocates for gay marriage say the community and the nation have made up its collective mind. Now the politicians have to get in line and act.

“After the federal government won a High Court Challenge to same-sex marriage laws in the ACT last year, marriage equality advocates drew up a hit list of 50 MPs in the federal Parliament they thought could be persuaded to support marriage equality, including senior ministers Julie Bishop, Joe Hockey and Christopher Pyne.”

It is only a matter of time, as we have said before, and Australia will join the list of nations that have legalized same-sex marriage.
